How is your dog at risk if it chases a sheep
1. If you dog is chasing sheep it is no longer in your control - this puts it at risk as it may then go on to run into a road or get lost.
2. If your dog is chasing sheep it could get damaged from over running, over excitement, butted or kicked by a sheep or other farm animal

How can you protect your dog when out walking
1. Make sure your dog is well trained. Go to classes or get expert advice. Your dog should come immediately when called when off the lead.
2. Walk in areas where you know there are no farm animals.
3. If you are out walking and you unexpectedly come across farm animals - put your dog on a lead. Any dog is difficult to control once another animal starts to run so 'under close control' does not guarantee the safety of your dog or the other animal.
4. Watch out for signs near gates or styles at the entrance to fields that state there are sheep or livestock in the field - follow the instructions.

What more can you do to protect your dog?
1. Make sure your garden is well fenced. Your dog could escape whilst you are watching TV and kill sheep or get killed on the roads.
2. Make sure that other people walking your dog are capable, very used to dogs and old enough to make the right decisions.
3. Make sure that people walking your dog understand the risks associated with loose dogs near livestock.

Commercial dog walkers
Never walk dogs in numbers near farm animals. They can rapidly become a hunting pack with disastrous consequences.
